Lake Level Monitoring RBR Ltd, an Ottawa company that makes oceanographic instruments to measure water quality and tide levels, uses the property at the island on Little Silver Lake to test some of its equipment.

As part of these tests RBR maintains an automatic weather station on the island and it also records the depth of water to compare with precipitation values. The weather and water depth readings are reported every 15 minutes and are accessible on-line. This url will take the reader directly to the depth recordings. If other parameters from the weather monitor are required, use the pop-up menu at the bottom left of the page. The "rain accumulation" for example, will give the rainfall figures for the previous period. We do not measure snow precipitation, unfortunately. It is interesting to note, however, that even during the winter months when the lake is frozen the water level continues to decline. The rate of decline in mid- December was about 10mm per day.

All the data are presented in metric units (metres for the level, mm for precipitation and so on). The datum point of the water level is arbitrary, although a correlation between these readings and those of other residents on the lake has been made. We have also used the relationship between the precipitation and lake level to derive first order hydrodynamic models of the LSL-Rainbow system for summer and winter.

A permanent link to this page, Lake Levels LSL, has been added to the left hand menu on the Home page. Any questions about this equipment or analyses may be sent to the Association president, Eileen Barbeau, or the Lake Steward, Frank Sammut, who will forward them to Frank Johnson.

Beaver Management Additional information has been added to the Lake Steward page.
